Continuation of Long-Term Medications Prior to Surgery

Take all medications including morning of surgery with sips of water EXCEPT diuretics and those listed below
Insulin and oral hypoglycemics, see
diabetic guidelines.
Coumadin should be discontinued as per surgeon and/or PCP. An INR blood test should be ordered the day of surgery
Aspirin and NSAIDS
Discontinued as per surgeon
If aspirin is withheld it should be done one week prior to surgery
Plavix: Consider internal medicine consultation. See also

Herbal pills: Discontinue one week prior to surgery
Diet pills: Discontinue two weeks prior to surgery
